Photo a Whenever: Photo 124. This is a picture of the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) 7 train Flushing Line elevated track at Court Square in Queens, NY.

The NYC subway system was built by three different companies, the IRT, the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT), and the Independent Subway System (IND), which was run by the city. Because the subway system was built by competing companies, they didn’t build transfers between their lines, and would even go out of their way to make it difficult to transfer or for the other company to build competing service.

Where this picture is taken, there is also underground service from two IND lines, serving three other trains, the G, E, and M. It wasn’t until June 3rd 2011 that a transfer was built between the IRT 7 line and the IND G,E, and M lines even though the stations are right above one another.

I’ve driven past this place a thousand times and never knew it was called that. Some city, huh?

This is cool:

In 1986, Keith Haring got a $25 ticket for painting graffiti on a handball court in East Harlem. Perhaps sensing the crack epidemic of the 1980s reaching a fever pitch, the Parks Department contacted him months later with a request to finish the mural.

Photo a Whenever: Photo 123. This photo was taken the second day of the siggi’s / NYVelocity Racing training camp in Southern California. While descending, I took a corner to fast/ with the wrong approach and ate it right into that dirt right there. I wasn’t injured, just scrapped up, so was able to ride the rest of the ride no problem.

Fun fact: I when I first went to take a drink of water after the crash, I ended up getting a mouth full of dirt instead of water.

Photo a Whenever: photo 122. This photo was taken from the top of our highest climb during the Siggi’s cycling training camp in Southern California. I believe we were at the highest point we could ride our bicycles to in the surrounding mountains. The road we descended is called Mulholland highway, but the decent I’m told is called Rock Store, and is named after a well known biker restaurant at the bottom. Biker as in motorcycle. The GPS data attached to this photo tells me that I’m at the top of Stunt road. The view is looking east. If you looked west you could see the ocean. The climb was challenging to say the least

Photo a Whenever: Photo 119. This is Peep World, a sex store, peep show, and strip club near Penn Station that closed down March 26th 2012. The story below covers Peep Worlds last day of business, highlighting some of the deals. “All DVDs are $5 (except for the bestiality movies, which go for $10).” One commenter on the article wrote: “this is very sad. there are less and less places one can go to release. life in new york can be lonely and stressful and these booths have got me through the day a few times. i guess the internets easy access to smut put this place under.”

I couldn’t find out when Peep World opened, only that it had been around for “decades.”

Peep World is a holdover from the days when midtown was filled with porn shops, strip clubs, and crime.

Photo a Whenever: Photo 118. This is a picture of Columbus Circle during the snow Friday night. Columbus Circle is the point where all distances to New York City are measured. So if you’re driving to the city and see a sign that says 200 miles to New York City, you are 200 miles away from Columbus Circle.

I took this picture on my way back from seeing the movie Koch, a documentary about the 105th mayor of New York who recently died.

Photo a Whenever: Photo 117. This is a picture of one of the highest escalators in the Downtown Brooklyn Macy’s store. The escalator goes from the 7th to the 8th floor of the bizarre building. You can’t see it in this picture, but this escalator goes into the ceiling. If you walk around to the other side of the floor you’ll find more escalators that go up to an eighth and ninth floors.

The first five floors of this Macy’s are used for retail sales. The 6th floor is apparently used for seasonal sales. The upper floors are a bizarre mix of empty old retail space, offices, chained doors, christmas decorations, big sliding display walls, like you would use in a play, and old retail displays that were clearly just abandoned with merchandise in them still.

Going to the upper floors of this Macy’s was like going back in time. The floors were still the old hardwood, and the doors to the Macy’s investigations office looked like the entrance to an 1930’s detectives office.

Finally, this Macy’s was originally the flagship store for a department store called Abraham & Straus which was founded in 1865 as (Wechsler & Abraham) which eventually purchased and changed it’s name to Macy’s.
